Phoenix 22 – 1

Image 1 of the 2010 Series Phoenix 22

Phoenix 22 begins

This year I’m doing things a little differently, by releasing the work an image at a time for 22 days. I believe this will allow for a much more direct look at the images as they stand individually. I consider the work expressionist so I’d love to hear how the work makes you feel or get your stream of conciousness responses to the visual language that I’ve presented here. Much like @alandd’s response last year “..the drips raise my anger..”, which ended up in the Phoenix 21 book, comments that tap into the power of expression will be used in the Phoenix 22 book.

To facilitate discussion the images will be released on etsyflickrfacebook, and here in this webspace. It will be easy to buy 16×24″ prints of the work on my etsy account, view and comment on the Phoenix 22 set on flickr and facebook or you may discover new insights to the work as I talk about it here on Lying to Tell the Truth.

Participation is king

I’m seeking your participation this year and have some special rewards for those that participate by commenting, sharing, and buying the work. Comments that really delve into the work and ask questions will obviously score much higher than “I like it”, in fact I might give negative points to that ;). While sharing is obviously easily done on Facebook and Twitter, favoriting on flickr and etsy will also count as sharing.

Welcome to Phoenix 22. Enjoy.

  1. First!

(I guess that is kind of cheating on my own site. ;)

  2. John Lynch

Hey bro! I linked this page in the Phoenix Woodland Neighborhood Group page. I'm excited to look at your new stuff! When/where is/will it be hanging?

  3. Can I get that link? I didn't know the neighborhood had a group page. : guess I'm a little behind the times. The work will be released one image at a time online for 22 days. Then the book will be posted, following that there will be a book signing/first exhibition TBD but early in May. I'll definitely keep you posted! :)

  4. I wish I could see these like 5ft x 5ft. At first glance, all I saw was red. But after looking at it, I see a gradient of colors starting with orange in the upper right hand corner, and soft pink in the lower left.

The image makes me think of “lust interrupted”- probably because of the symbolism behind the color red and the way the paint is smeared and shifted across at a line.

That point in the image keeps messing with my mind…it's like the paint is shifted except for when it gets to the blue “L” – then it looks continuous.

The culmination of everything above leaves me feeling intimidated. I think that is why I connect much more with some of the more subtle images in your series.

  5. It reminds me of a ninja strike: black dashing in, red spilling liberally, and a white flash for an exit.
